Job Description Institute of Arctic Climate and Environment Research, Research Institute for Global Change, is filling a postdoctoral researcher position in a project funded by the Japan Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS) titled “Understanding the transient changes of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions and transport under permafrost thaw in the boreal forest, Interior Alaska (FY2020-FY2023, Principal Investigator: Hideki Kobayashi).”

The successful applicant will participate in quantitative analyses of the impacts of accelerated warming in the boreal forests. In particular, we intend to focus on the consequences of a gradually deepening soil active layer and the interactions among vegetation processes, physical and microbial processes in soil, and atmospheric transport of GHGs, including boundary layer interactions.

This study, which has been continued as a collaborative study between JAMSTEC and the International Arctic Research Center (IARC), University of Fairbanks (UAF), will be conducted in the Poker Flat Research Range (Ameriflux US-Prr) of the UAF.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in field work activities and eddy flux data analyses, including the establishment of a soil warming experiment, possibly beginning in 2021 or 2022.

In addition, the following are potential research topics:
1. Understanding underground processes, such as soil moisture/temperature, microbial activities, and fine root dynamics, through observation, data analysis, and modeling;
2. Analysis of long-term GHG flux data and modeling with micrometeorological and ecosystem models;
3. Analysis of GHG flux transport from the surface to the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) to the free atmosphere using ABL and transport models (e.g., WRF-Chem, CLASS).

A variety of project members who work in the fields of soil physical and biological processes, micrometeorology, atmospheric transport, and remote sensing will participate in the project. The applicant will have ample opportunity to work closely with these team members using previous observation data and modeling environments.

The work will be based in Yokohama, Japan; however, depending on the research topics,
the successful applicant may be expected to stay at UAF for several months to enhance the collaborative studies between JAMSTEC and UAF.

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the event of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the effective date of employment. In addition, no more than 5 years can have passed between the last day of the fiscal year in which the applicants obtained a Ph.D. and the effective date of employment.(i.e., applicants who earned a Ph.D. after April 2015 are eligible.)

Total period will be terminated on the end of March, 2024 after two contract renewals.
*First contract period is from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
However, it might be changed due to the influence of COVID-19 expansion.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful applicant.
*Contract period might change due to the budget constraints of the project.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
JPY 5,250,000
*There is no raise.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service is not available.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
