Job Description The Institute of Arctic Climate and Environment Research (IACE; Director: Takashi Kikuchi), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) invites applications for an Engineer position.

The IACE conducts research and development to understand on-going environmental changes, elucidate their processes, and assess the impact of global warming in the Arctic region where the impact is most significant and aims to contribute to solutions for various Arctic issues and the global environment in Japan and abroad by disseminating its results.

To advance our Arctic research internationally and establish an operations and research system as an international research platform of new Arctic research vessels and other JAMSTEC research facilities, the applicant will provide appropriate advice and recommendations based on their knowledge of the international situation and international legal policies related to Arctic issues.

Specifically, based on knowledge of high-level international frameworks related to the Arctic, domestic and international Arctic policies, and legal policies related to activities in the Arctic Ocean and Arctic region, the applicant will contribute to the study, development, and realization of international collaboration methods for Arctic research. In addition, the applicant will produce outputs, such as written reports.

Engineer:
Engineering job is expected to improve and develop fundamental and comprehensive technologies related to the business operations of JAMSTEC, as well as maintain, update, plan, and promote such advanced technologies.

Engineer:
Engineer is expected to understand the goals and objectives of his/her work and to conduct the business as a person in charge of technology-related work at JAMSTEC and as the core of the assigned department.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements The successful applicant must have completed a master degree in a closely related field of research or technology development, or possess equivalent development skills.

*The applicant should have knowledge pertaining to international promotion of Arctic research. Experience with the Arctic Science Ministers' Meeting, the Arctic Council, its working groups, etc., is preferable.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:
1 position for an Engineer

(2) Type of contract:
Tenure-track fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours:
9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)

(4) Contract Period:
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2027 after a contract renewal.

*First contract period is from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2025.
*Effective date of employment is negotiable. However it might be changed due to the influence of COVID-19 expansion.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful applicant.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 years during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*Passing the examination after a certain period of employment, the successful applicant will be transitioned to the position of permanent employee starting from the next fiscal year. For details, please contact Human Resources Section.
Employment period ends at the end of the fiscal year in which he/she reaches the age of 60.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 5,000,000-7,500,000

*Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

Applicants will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview.
