Compilation and Dissemination of Marine Biodiversity Data

We operate the Japan Ocean Biodiversity Information System Center (J-OBIS), which is the Japanese node of the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS). Additionally, we disseminate information both domestically and overseas by compiling marine biodiversity data around Japan and providing it to OBIS via the Biological Information System for Marine Life (BISMaL).

Deep-Sea Video and Image Distribution and AI Technology Development

In addition to storing and managing the vast amounts of video and image data captured so far in our deep-sea surveys, we also classify and tag the data by imaging conditions and subject for both domestic and overseas data users. Based on these videos and images, we publish data on deep-sea debris (i.e., trash). We are also developing AI algorithms that can extract new information from the video and image data.

Development of a Data Provision and Sharing Platform

We are developing and maintaining systems to provide and disseminate a variety of data categories, including not just marine biodiversity, deep-sea video and image data but also the survey and research data obtained through our research activities. In addition, we are developing a software platform to improve the ease of distribution of marine data and promote sharing of this data.
