OverviewIt has been strongly expected that physical oceanography elucidates routes, volume, and composition of sea currents that convey nutrients to aquaculture and fixed-net fishery in the Sanriku coastal seas. The project "Real-Time Monitoring of Marine Environment in Otsuchi Bay", in which a variety of monitoring instruments will be placed in the bay, aims to elucidate the routes, volume, and composition of coastal sea currents. Moreover, the scientific real-time data obtained by the project, such as water temperature and meteorological conditions, will be distributed via internet to contribute to practical use in the local fishery.
Results and Future PlanIt was demonstrated by the project that a prominent baroclinic circulation extends over the bay in summer, and this work has been published in Journal of Oceanography. The real-time marine environmental data that are distributed by this project is widely viewed via internet, and its total number of views sometimes exceeds five hundreds per month. We have received a lot of approving feedback from the fishermen: "The project indeed plays important roles in our fishery activities."
