This hands-on training is organised as two connected sessions.
Day 1 – Build your Digital Twin: Participants define the user challenge, identify relevant observations and data, connect models and analytics, and design useful outputs and services.
Day 2 – Connect your Digital Twin: The focus shifts to interoperability, metadata, APIs, semantics, standards, portability and reusable components. Participants explore what is needed for a local twin to connect with other digital twins and wider DTO infrastructures.
Working in small groups, participants will develop a Digital Twin concept, assess interoperability and reuse needs, and prepare a first implementation roadmap.
The training is suitable for scientists, DTO developers, data and infrastructure specialists, marine managers and other professionals. No advanced programming skills are required.
The event also launches the free self-paced course “Build Your Own Local Digital Twin of the Ocean.”

Building and Connecting Digital Twins of the Ocean

The workshop focuses on the real challenge facing the DTO community today: not a lack of projects, but a lack of structured opportunities for practitioners, developers, scientists, platform operators, and users to learn from one another and identify concrete collaboration opportunities. The "knowledge sharing clinic" part turns participants into both contributors and problem-solvers, rather than passive listeners.
As Digital Twin Ocean (DTO) initiatives continue to emerge worldwide, many organisations are independently developing technologies, platforms, methodologies, standards, and solutions to address similar challenges. While there is strong interest in collaboration, interoperability, and reuse, opportunities for structured exchange between DTO developers, operators, and stakeholders remain limited.
This highly interactive half-day workshop will bring together representatives from DTO initiatives, research institutions, government agencies, industry, and user communities to explore common challenges, identify complementary capabilities, and uncover opportunities for collaboration. Rather than relying on formal presentations, the workshop will use facilitated discussions, whiteboards, sticky-note exercises, and a Knowledge Sharing Clinic format where participants collectively diagnose and address real-world challenges brought forward by their peers.
The workshop aims to strengthen relationships across the DTO ecosystem, surface practical opportunities for cooperation, and identify pathways toward greater interoperability, knowledge exchange, and coordinated development.
The event builds on the growing community interest in shared learning and collaboration across global DTO efforts and seeks to establish stronger foundations for future cooperation, communities of practice, and joint initiatives.

A moderated discussion will then provide an opportunity to exchange experiences, identify synergies and explore ways to sustain and expand the project's impact through stronger links with existing networks and initiatives.
