Job Description | We are recruiting two Postdoctoral Researchers to participate in the research project titled “Slow Slip Event Monitoring Program (~FY2030 PI: Takane Hori)”. [Research Description] (Immediately upon employment) The Research and Development Center for Earthquake and Tsunami Forecasting (FEAT) aims to understand the nature of offshore earthquakes, slow slip events, and crustal deformation in regions such as the Nankai Trough megathrust zone. To achieve this, we are developing and deploying advanced seafloor geodetic observation systems that are connected to submarine cables and capable of real-time monitoring. These systems include seafloor optical fiber strainmeters, borehole tiltmeters, and high-precision seafloor pressure gauges with on-site calibration. We are also advancing observation technologies for boreholes drilled by the deep-sea scientific drilling vessel Chikyu, including borehole optical fiber strainmeters, borehole pore pressure sensors, and other instruments. In parallel, we are applying state-of-the-art fiber-optic sensing technologies—especially Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), which has seen rapid progress in recent years—to submarine cable networks. These technologies enable dense, wide-area observations of offshore seismicity, crustal deformation, and oceanic variation. We are conducting continuous broadband DAS observations off Cape Muroto in the Nankai Trough, while also developing and demonstrating techniques for detecting seafloor crustal deformation using fiber-optic sensors. Similar efforts are being carried out in other regions, with the aim of achieving a broader understanding of crustal activity. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to one or more of the following research areas: 1. Research and development of maritime observation technologies (fiber-optic sensing and borehole-based monitoring) 2. Research and development of analysis methods for offshore observation data (earthquakes, slow slip events, and fault slip processes) 3. Observational studies of offshore earthquakes, slow slip events, and crustal deformation, particularly in the Nankai Trough and surrounding areas, based on marine geophysical data. (The scope of possible changes) The duties designated by JAMSTEC [Relevant Research Fields] Field Seismology, Geophysics, Solid Earth Science, Mathematics and Information Science and related fields |
