Job Description The Physical and Chemical Oceanography Research Group, the Global Ocean Observation Research Center (GOORC) (Director: Shinya Kouketsu), at the Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is soliciting applications for a Research Technician or Research Technician (II) or (III).

The Physical and Chemical Oceanography Research Group of GOORC at RIGC is conducting research and development to understand oceanographic changes and evaluate their role in global environmental changes by conducting shipboard basin-scale observations.
This position is for an associate researcher who will perform high-precision chemical analyses, including observation design and quality control, to conduct efficient shipboard observations. The ideal candidate will be willing to go beyond chemical analyses to develop new calibration methods for sensor observations, apply findings to the technical development related to automatic observation net equipment such as floats, and acquire scientific knowledge related to study design and the implementation of observations.

[Research Description]
Each research technician is assigned some of the following responsibilities:
(1) Onboard measurements of quantities such as dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients, including quality control.
(2) Sensor calibration (e.g., dissolved oxygen sensors) and development (e.g., pH sensors) using seawater samples.
(3) Efficiency improvement of oceanographic (mainly shipboard) observations and development of observation techniques.

Research Technician (II), (III):
Research Technician (II), (III) is expected to contribute to the promotion of research and development by accumulating expertise in areas such as observation devices and analytical instruments, as an expert in the operation of basic technologies related to the organization’s research and development efforts.
Requirements Applicants must have completed a Master’s degree in a closely related field of research or technology development, or possess equivalent development skills.

【Qualifications and experience】
・ Experience in onboard measurements and quality control of dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, or nutrients.
・ Ability to work as a team with researchers and technicians within and beyond the research group and good communication skills in Japanese.
・ Background in research and work related to global environmental change or environmental impact assessment.
・ Interest in developing methods to solve marine global environmental problems, and experience working at overseas research institutions.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:

(2) Type of contract:
Tenure-track fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours:
Discretionary labor system
*The determination of working hours allocation, including start and end times, as well as the method of carrying out research and development activities (including teleworking), is left to the discretion of the employee.

(4) Contract Period:
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2029 after a contract renewal.

*First contract period is from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2027.
*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
*Contract may be renewed for a maximum of three fiscal years at a time, but the total employment period will be limited to five fiscal years (March 31, 2029) and will not be renewed thereafter.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after their retirement). Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 5,500,000-7,000,000

*Salary will be competitive based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the candidate.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available. (There are criteria based on income etc.)
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
