JAMATEC IMG

Illuminating Earthquakes and Volcanic Activities for Disaster Mitigation

IMG (Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics) in JAMSTEC conducts large-scale observations in both seismogenic zones in the ocean around Japan, e.g., Nankai Trough, Japan Trench, Kuril Trench, and submarine volcanoes, e.g., Kikai caldera, using JAMSTEC vessels and various state-of-the-art marine exploration technologies. We also realize a system for monitoring and forecasting earthquake and volcanic activities, and tsunamis with large-scale and high-precision numerical simulations.

Furthermore, in line with SDGs 11 (sustainable cities and communities), our institute will contribute to disaster mitigation by sharing the scientific knowledge we have gained with society.

For details, please visit IMG web page, or see our pamphlet and poster below.

Project+Databases

Research project

Program for Promoting Researches on the Supercomputer Fugaku “Large-scale numerical simulation of earthquake generation, wave propagation and soil amplification”
We calculate ground shaking due to large earthquakes and slow seafloor deformation that induces tsunamis, using the supercomputer Fugaku.

Database

JAMSTEC provides a wide variety of geoscience data. Detailed descriptions of the available data can be seen in the following links.

JAMSTEC Seismic Survey Database
Categories of accessible data are Multi-Channel Seismic reflection data, refraction and wide-angle seismic reflection data by Ocean Bottom Seismograph.

Pacific 21 (Seismic data archives)
Data of earthquake and Earth’s magnetic field obtained through observation network called Pacific 21 built in Pacific Islands, East and South East Asia are open in this website.

DODAI -Domestic geochemical Database for International open science-
A geochemical database for the basement rocks of the Japanese islands including major and trace element concentrations, isotopic ratios, geographical coordinates of sampling points, and geological and lithological information.
