Overview
To contribute earthquake disaster reconstruction, we conduct marine biological and ecological researches including structure of biological resources in open ocean benthopelagic ecosystem off Sanriku.

Overview of the Observation

Results and Future Plan
Otoliths of 27 individuals collected off Kamaishi and of 30 individuals collected off Abashiri were analyzed. Based on the otolith data, the age range of the sample population from Kamaishi was 3-14 years old, while the Abashiri sample population consisted of individuals of ages 10 years and above, and more than half of the population was >=15 years old.Ten-, 11-, and 14-year-old individuals were observed in both the Abashiri and Kamaishi populations. However, the size of the Abashiri individuals was significantly larger than that of the age-matched Kamaishi individuals. The difference in dietary environment between the Pacific coast of Tohoku and the Sea of Okhotsk might be reflected in the variations in body size between the sample populations from the areas off Kamaishi and off Abashiri.
