Overview
1. Establishment of new management means for conservation of kelp beds (1) A threshold of density and biomass of the sea urchin Mesocentrotus nudus, which destroys Eisenia bicyclis kelp beds by their overgrazing (2) Grazing strategies of M. nudus to destroy E. bicyclis kelp beds (3) Recovering processes of E. bicyclis kelp beds after sea urchin removal (4) Controlling sea urchin behavior using the stipes of Undaria pinnatifida kelp for effective urchin removal (5) Effect of several species of small algae on growth of M. nudus juveniles, which recruited massively on barrens, for their use of sea urchin aquaculture 2. Establishment of high technology for seaweed cultivation (1) Development of an improved version of the underwater blue LED light (2) Testing the improved LED light at a culture field of Undaria pinnatifida in Shizugawa Bay (3) Monitoring the growth and quality of U. pinnatifida and the occurrences of grazing animals at the culture field
