JAMSTEC gives top priority in its code of conduct to making utmost consideration for the environment in every
aspect of its activities, since the subject of its research is "ocean-earth".
The following basic environmental policy has been established to ensure conservation of the environment both in promotion of research and development activities and in day-to-day activities.
JAMSTEC will respect international laws and rules such as the "UN Convention on the Law of the Sea" and "UN Convention on the Biological Diversity" as well as observe relevant domestic laws and regulations such as the "Basic Environment Law", "Fundamental Law for Establishing a Sound Material-Cycle Society" and "Law Concerning the Promotion of Business Activities with Environmental Consideration by Specified Corporations, etc., by Facilitating Access to Environmental Information, and Other Measures", and at the same time JAMSTEC will establish and comply with its policies on environment, safety and health in various projects such as oceanographic research and observation, thereby promoting its activities which take account of environmental conservation.
Considering the Earth as a unique system which is largely influenced by the Ocean, JAMSTEC will conduct fundamental research and development to elucidate global environmental changes such as global warming, including various observational research, predictive research and development of related technologies, and provide the results at home and abroad, and thereby contribute to the development of domestic and international activities for environmental awareness.
JAMSTEC will systematically reduce the environmental load in its activities through greenhouse gas emission control, "Green Purchasing", waste control, etc., and thereby contribute to the creation of a sustainable society.
JAMSTEC will establish and improve the management system for environment, safety and health, and will implement environmental risk management to prevent accidents that may have an impact on the environment. Should an accident or disaster occur, it will take prompt and appropriate measures to minimize the impact on the environment while giving the first priority to safety and health, and will make efforts in accordance with the "Openness Principle" to share the lessons learned and knowledge acquired in such experience with society.
