Job Description The Engineering Department (Director: Kenji Nagahashi), Institute for Marine-Earth Exploration and Engineering (MarE3), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), is seeking a few Engineers(II) or Engineers (III) for the following research and development work to establish next-generation ocean observation technology.

[Description]
The Engineering Department, Institute for Marine-Earth Exploration and Engineering (MarE3) is aiming to improve the safety, accuracy, and efficiency of surveys and observations in various oceanographic areas with water depths below 7,000m, a complex topography, and hydrothermal eruption areas, which are important research targets of the project. The project aims to develop and implement next-generation autonomous underwater vehicle systems that can handle a wide range of observation activities, to advance ocean robotics, such as the automation and downsizing of ocean observation platforms. We welcome applicants with new perspectives for addressing the research areas described and those eager to collaborate with people inside and outside of JAMSTEC, in an effort to create next-generation deep-sea exploration systems for the future.

The successful candidate will be engaged in the development of one of the following technologies related to the abovementioned theme.
(1) System development of image processing and recognition technology and robot control technology, to realize automation of oceanographic observation.
(2) Understanding of basic and applied physics and the development of technologies, to improve underwater communication, positioning, sonar, etc.

Engineer:
Engineering job is expected to improve and develop fundamental and comprehensive technologies related to the business operations of JAMSTEC, as well as maintain, update, plan, and promote such advanced technologies.

[Position]
Engineer (II):
Engineer (II) is expected to understand the goals and objectives of their work, to perform duties as an expert in technology-related work, and to serve as a core member of the assigned department.

Engineer (III):
Engineer (III) is expected to understand the goals and objectives of their work, and to perform duties independently as an expert in technology-related work.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the position will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
Requirements Applicants must have completed a bachelor degree, a college degree, or a higher professional school degree.

We welcome applicants who have experience and skills in the development of various technologies (system linkage, database construction, geographic information systems, programming, data analysis, etc.) and those interested in the development of new platforms for solving marine and global environmental problems, with the communication skills necessary to promote collaboration inside and outside of JAMSTEC.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:
a few positions for Engineers (II) or Engineers (III)

(2) Type of contract:
Tenure-track fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours:
9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)

(4) Contract Period:
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2028 after a contract renewal.
First contract period is from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2026.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful candidate.

*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after their retirement). Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 4,500,000~6,000,000

*Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
