| Job Description | The Engineering Department (Director: Kenji Nagahashi), Institute for Marine-Earth Exploration and Engineering (MarE3), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), is seeking a few researchers for the following research and development work to establish next-generation ocean observation technology. [Research Description] The Engineering Department, Institute for Marine-Earth Exploration and Engineering (MarE3) is aiming to improve the safety, accuracy, and efficiency of surveys and observations in various oceanographic areas having water depths below 7,000m, a complex topography, and hydrothermal eruption areas, which are important research targets of the project. Key action items include the development and implementation of next-generation autonomous underwater vehicle systems for a wide range of observation activities and the advancement of ocean robotics technology, e.g., automating and downsizing ocean observation platforms. This position is open to researchers who will vigorously promote the abovementioned themes to create the next generation of deep-sea exploration systems, based on new perspectives and ideas, unique technologies and experience, and through interactions both within and outside of the organization. The successful candidate will be engaged in one of the following research projects related to the abovementioned theme. (1) Research that integrates image processing/recognition technology and mechatronics to develop control platforms that will enable robots to act as avatars or as autonomous robots under the deep sea. (2) Research that promotes the development of next-generation underwater visualization and remote-sensing technologies using sound waves and other wave phenomena. | Working Conditions & Contract Period | (1) Number of positions: A few positions for Researchers (II) (2) Type of contract: Tenure-track fixed-term employee (3) Working Hours: Discretionary labor system (4) Contract Period: Period of employment is from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2028 *Effective date of employment is negotiable. *One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed. *In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change. *After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after their retirement).
