Job Description The Engineering Department (Director: Kenji Nagahashi), Institute for Marine-Earth Exploration and Engineering (MarE3), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), is seeking a few researchers for the following research and development work to establish next-generation ocean observation technology.

[Research Description]
The Engineering Department, Institute for Marine-Earth Exploration and Engineering (MarE3) is aiming to improve the safety, accuracy, and efficiency of surveys and observations in various oceanographic areas having water depths below 7,000m, a complex topography, and hydrothermal eruption areas, which are important research targets of the project. Key action items include the development and implementation of next-generation autonomous underwater vehicle systems for a wide range of observation activities and the advancement of ocean robotics technology, e.g., automating and downsizing ocean observation platforms. This position is open to researchers who will vigorously promote the abovementioned themes to create the next generation of deep-sea exploration systems, based on new perspectives and ideas, unique technologies and experience, and through interactions both within and outside of the organization.

The successful candidate will be engaged in one of the following research projects related to the abovementioned theme.

(1) Research that integrates image processing/recognition technology and mechatronics to develop control platforms that will enable robots to act as avatars or as autonomous robots under the deep sea.
(2) Research that promotes the development of next-generation underwater visualization and remote-sensing technologies using sound waves and other wave phenomena.

Researcher (II) is expected independently to conduct research and technology development and to share results through scientific publications and achieve technology innovation.

Requirements Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the effective date of employment.

[Qualifications and experience etc.]
Experience and skills in the development of various technologies (system linkage, database construction, geographic information systems, programming, data analysis, etc.), the motivation to undertake development work to solve marine and global environmental problems, and the necessary communication skills to promote collaboration inside and outside of JAMSTEC.

Period of employment is from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2028

*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after their retirement). Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 6,000,000~7,000,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
