Job Description The Geochemistry Research Group, Submarine Resources Research Center (SRRC), Research Institute for Marine Resources Utilization (MRU) is soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher or Project Engineer(II) / Project Engineer(III) to work on a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research project entitled "Research and development of sulfur isotope studies on seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits and volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits on land (FY2023~FY2025, PI: Tatsuo Nozaki)”.

[Research Description]
(1) Preparation of thin and/or polished sections of sulfide rocks from SMS and VMS deposits.
(2) Petrographic observations of thin and/or polished sections using microscopy, SEM, EPMA, etc.
(3) Analysis of sulfur isotopes of SMS and VMS deposits, etc., in collaboration with other research institutes.
*Postdoctoral researchers are also expected to publish the above results in a paper.

The successful candidate will contribute to research aimed at understanding the role of microbial activity in the initial formation of SMS and VMS deposits on the subseafloor. The successful candidate will develop and conduct sulfur isotope studies of SMS and VMS deposits, with the aim of better understanding both the metallogenesis of these deposits and the subseafloor sulfur cycle.

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subjects which are authorized by the Projects under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve their research qualities.

Engineering job is expected to improve and develop fundamental and comprehensive technologies related to the business operations of JAMSTEC, as well as maintain, update, plan, and promote such advanced technologies.

Project Engineer (II):
Project Engineer (II) is expected to understand the goals and objectives of their work, to perform duties as an expert in technology-related work, and to serve as a core member of the assigned department.

Project Engineer (III):
Project Engineer (III) is expected to understand the goals and objectives of their work, and to perform duties independently as an expert in technology-related work.
Requirements Postdoctoral Researcher:
Applicants are required to have obtained or expect to obtain a Ph.D. in a related field by the effective date of employment. Applicants are required to commence employment no later than 5 years after the last day of the fiscal year in which they obtain their Ph.D. (i.e., only applicants who obtained their Ph.D. after April 2018 are eligible).

Project Engineer (II) / Project Engineer (III):
Applicants must have must have completed a bachelor degree in a closely related field of research or technology development, or possess equivalent development skills.

(4) Contract Period:         
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2026 after two contract renewals.
*First contract period is from June 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024.
*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful candidate.
*Contract period might change due to budget constraints of the projects.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change. 
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the candidate.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.

Postdoctoral Researcher:
JPY 4,400,000-5,600,000
*There is no raise.

Project Engineer (II) / Project Engineer (III):
e.g., JPY4,500,000~6,500,000
*Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Postdoctoral Researcher: Housing lease service is not available.
Project Engineer(II) / Project Engineer(III): Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
