Job Description The Super-cutting-edge Grand and Advanced Research (SUGAR) Program (Director: Ken Takai), Institute for Extra-cutting-edge Science and Technology Avant-garde Research (X-star), Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), is recruiting a Researcher, Research Technician or Engineer to engage in the following research project.

The SUGAR program pursues creative research and technology development for a research objective described in the mid- and long-term plan of JAMSTEC, “Understanding environmental conditions and functions of the ocean during the origin and evolution of life on Earth”. We are attempting to further diversify our research and technology into other research fields such as astrobiology, CO2 storage and carbon recycling. We are recruiting a Researcher to lead the production of results concerning cutting-edge research and development, or a Research Technician/Engineer to supports the production of results by engineering development and technical operation. All positions are encouraged to drive the research and development forward with novel perspectives, consideration, specific skills/experience, and interactions with people both within and outside of JAMSTEC.

The successful candidate will develop, improve, maintain, and operate comprehensive experimental systems, including high-temperature and high-pressure hydrothermal reactors simulating deep-sea hydrothermal systems and related organic/inorganic chemical analyses, for the purpose of “Understanding environmental conditions and functions of the ocean during the origin and evolution of life on Earth.” The successful candidate is also encouraged to apply research and development using experimental systems into areas such as astrobiology, CO2 storage, and carbon recycling. A Researcher (Technology) is required to lead the production of research and development results, while a Research Technician/Engineer is expected to produce the results in collaboration with researchers.

Researcher (Technology):
Researcher (Technology) is expected to conduct fundamental, originative, or advanced technology development and related research.

Research Technician:
Research Technician is expected to promote fundamental or comprehensive technological improvements related to research and development, maintain and upgrade these advanced technologies, and conduct research.

Engineer:
Engineering job is expected to improve and develop fundamental and comprehensive technologies related to the business operations of JAMSTEC, as well as maintain, update, plan, and promote such advanced technologies.

[Position]
Researcher (Ⅱ):
Researcher (Ⅱ) is expected independently to conduct research and technology development and to share results through scientific publications and achieve technology innovation.

Research Technician (Ⅱ):
Research Technician (Ⅱ) is expected to contribute to the promotion of research and development by accumulating expertise in areas such as observation devices and analytical instruments, as an expert in the operation of basic technologies related to the organization’s research and development efforts.

Engineer (Ⅱ):
Engineer (Ⅱ) is expected to understand the goals and objectives of their work, to perform duties as an expert in technology-related work, and to serve as a core member of the assigned department.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the job title and the position will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
Requirements Researcher (Ⅱ): The successful candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in a closely related field of research or technology development.

Research Technician (Ⅱ), Engineer (Ⅱ): The successful candidate must have completed a master degree in a closely related field of research or technology development, or possess equivalent development skills.

【Qualifications and experience etc.】
Experience with high-pressure experiments using high-temperature hydrothermal fluid and liquid CO2 is desirable.

*One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed.

Research Technician (Ⅱ)

Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2027 after a contract renewal.
First contract period is from October 1, 2022 to March 31, 2025.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful candidate.

Engineer (Ⅱ)

9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)

(4) Contract Period:
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2027 after a contract renewal.
First contract period is from October 1, 2022 to March 31, 2025.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful candidate.


*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after their retirement). Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
Researcher (Ⅱ):
e.g., JPY 6,000,000~7,000,000

Research Technician (Ⅱ):
e.g., JPY 5,500,000~6,500,000

Engineer (Ⅱ):
e.g., JPY 5,000,000~6,000,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
*Engineer(Ⅱ): Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
