Submit Core Samples after Research Cruise

Core samples acquired during JAMSTEC cruises and Cooperative Research Cruises will be accepted, stored, managed and diseminated at the Kochi Core Research Institute's reefer storages, upon the request from Chief Scientists or Science Party members.

Acceptable samples

KOCHI/JAMSTEC only accepts core samples which can be made open and provided to secondary uses. Please submit core samples that meet the following requirements:

Completed metadata availableOnly samples with complete metadata of sampling, such as cruise ID, dates, coordinates, and water depths, are acceptable. The correspondence between metadata and physical samples should be clear.
Properly packedThe core samples shall be cut into appropriate lengths, splitted into halves, and packed using specified D-tubes, core bags, etc. to prevent disturbance or damage during transportation and storage.
Available for secondary usesSamples must be available for additional uses of general requesters after moratorium period.
Sample handling documentedSpcific arrangements for sample handling, such as contracts, agreements, or regulations, if any, must be documented.

Quality of sample preservedSumples must have been stored at proper temperatures and conditions during and after cruises, and their history of storage should be clear. Samples with significant spoilage or deterioration are not acceptable.

Request packing materials (D-tubes, etc.) (~ 1 month before the cruise)

Packing materials, such as D-tubes, core bags, etc., will be provided upon the request of Chief Scientists or Science Party members. Please submit your request at least one month prior to the departure of cruise so as to arrange the schedule for receiving packing materials and submitting samples, before and after the cruise, respectively.

Note that the provided packing materials do not cover core samples that are not submitted to the KOCHI/JAMSTEC. In addition, we cannot provide packing materials for core samples with unconventional diameters or section lengths that do not fit into regular D-tubes.

Send notice for submitting core samples (~ 1 week before submitting samples)

For submitting core samples to KOCHI/JAMSTEC, please email to the curator at least one week prior to the shipment. Note that shipping arrangement and cost are riable to submitters.
