The following pages provide essential information on employment at JAMSTEC, including positions, salaries, benefits, and staff facilities.
JAMSTEC is always looking for talented young scientists, skilled technicians, and experienced researchers to fill positions for the extremely broad range of research that is conducted at its many centers and among its groups.
JAMSTEC offers a diverse array of employment categories that can be broadly divided into tenured and fixed-term positions. Tenured employees, known at JAMSTEC as “permanent staff”, are guaranteed employment at JAMSTEC up to retirement age. Fixed-term employees, as the name implies, are hired for a fixed term specified in their contract, which may include an option for renewal contingent upon the results of a performance review.
Please visit our job Opportunities page for current job openings. Information on the JAMSTEC Young Research Fellowship is available here .
JAMSTEC offers competitive salaries and benefits that are commensurate with experience and skills. Salaries
are paid monthly on the 15th of each month. (For employees on daily wage contracts, payment is made in the
following month.)
If the 15th is a non-working day, the payment will be made on the 14th; if the 14th is also a non-working day,
the payment will be made on the 16th.
(If an employee commences working on or after the 15th, which is a pay day, the salary for their initial hire month
will be calculated on a per-diem basis and will be paid the following month.)
Persons working under this system may decide at their own discretion when to work,
regardless of the above-mentioned opening and closing times, and will be deemed to have worked for a total of 8
hours and 15 minutes per day. Employees under this system should ensure that they take a rest of a total of 60
minutes per day.
Persons working under this system may determine their own work schedules,
regardless of the above-mentioned opening and closing times, but must work during
the core times and satisfy the set total required work hours for each month.
Employees may opt to work under the flextime system to improve their work-life balance, even when it is not required by their work or under the staggered-shift system (the latter applies in cases where permission is granted for those raising pre-school children, taking elementary-school-age children to and from after-school childcare facilities, or providing nursing care to a family member).
For full-time employees, annual paid vacation is given, up to 20 days per fiscal year (i.e., from April to March of the following year), prorated according to date of hire, and any unused portion may be carried over only to the following fiscal year. Additionally, JAMSTEC grants special summer holidays and various types of special paid leave for significant life events, such as births, weddings, and deaths.
The Health Management Office acts to maintain and improve the physical and mental health of the company’s officers and employees (no medical practice is performed there, however). Physically and mentally healthy officers and employees contribute to the prevention of workplace accidents and the creation of safe and comfortable working environments. At JAMSTEC, employees can avail themselves of various medical examinations and consult with industrial physicians about health-related matters.
The Consultation Desk facilitates consultations on a range of matters, such as employees’ mental health or problems they may be experiencing in the workplace.
The Mutual Aid Association (hereafter MAA), formed in the spirit of mutual aid and equality, is an organization that is aimed at encouraging mutual assistance among its members and promoting their welfare. It undertakes a variety of programs in line with this goal. Herein, we provide a brief introduction to the primary articles associated with the MAA and its programs.
