| Job Description | The Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS; Director: Yugo Kanaya), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is recruiting a Researcher or Researcher (II) for the following research. [Research Description] The Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group studies the transport of chemicals through the oceans, atmosphere, and land, and the links between human activities and environmental geochemical cycles, ecosystems, and climate change. This position is open to researchers who will conduct observational studies to elucidate the mechanisms of the oceanic carbon cycle and biological pump under climate and environmental change. Examples of research topics are: (1) Research on the processes of marine biological pumps and the carbon cycle and related physical processes in oceans such as the western North Pacific; (2) Research and development for quantifying important processes, such as carbon fluxes, by linking platforms such as ship, float, and ocean stations, with technologies such as precision chemical analysis and optical measurements; (3) Research to promote the use of BGC-Argo data with specialty and cross-sectional use of ship-based observation opportunities; and (4) The generation of observational data on oceanographic state changes that is suitable for validating numerical models, and the integration of knowledge of the humanosphere and Earth surface systems that can also serve as a basis for realizing a carbon-neutral society and the study of Green Transformation (GX). | Working Conditions & Contract Period | (1) Number of positions: 1 position for Researcher or Researcher (II) (2) Type of contract: Tenure-track fixed-term employee (3) Working Hours: Discretionary labor system *The determination of working hours allocation, including start and end times, as well as the method of carrying out research and development activities (including teleworking), is left to the discretion of the employee. (4) Contract Period: Period of employment is from May 1, 2024 to March 31, 2029 *Effective date of employment is negotiable. *One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed. *On reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change. *After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after their retirement). | Salary | Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments) e.g., JPY 6,000,000-7,500,000 *Salary will be competitive, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the candidate. *Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary. |
| Terms of Employment | (1) Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances. (2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
