Available Position Postdoctoral Researcher (AGP25-014)
Recruiting Department Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)

*There may be a change in affiliation in the event of a reorganization of JAMSTEC.
Job Description We are soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on “Development of retrieval and post-processing algorithms for GOSAT-GW NO2 and GHG satellite data, with modeling and ground observations”, in a project using GOSAT-GW data products (FY2020-2030 projected; Principal Investigator: Yugo Kanaya, Researchers in related models: Prabir Patra, Takashi Sekiya, and Masayuki Takigawa) commissioned by the National Institute for Environmental Research (NIES) and supported by the Ministry of Environment, Japan.

[Research Description]
(Immediately upon employment)
The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) series has focused on the collection of data related to global greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). To better clarify their anthropogenic emissions, the soon-to-be launched GOSAT-GW satellite will measure nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in addition to the GHGs. This position requires (but is not limited to) innovative and independent research studies that will contribute to the broader project goals involving integrated research on GHGs and NO2. For this study, models (from global-scale to 1-km urban scale) and tools that JAMSTEC has developed in collaboration with the broader research community, including Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC) and Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model systems, will be used.
Specific goals of the project include the following:
1) Transport, chemistry, and emissions analyses using atmospheric chemistry-transport models and by integrating GHGs and NO2 data.
2) Development of methods to improve estimates of anthropogenic emissions over large areas based on GOSAT-GW observations, surface observations and numerical modeling simulations.
3) Processing of large-volume datasets obtained through satellite observations and numerical simulations, using
FORTRAN, Python, and related languages, as well as other analysis and visualization software.
4) Preparation of project outcome reports and peer-reviewed publications in high-quality journals.
