Available Position Postdoctoral Researcher (CGP23-009)
Recruiting Department Marine Seismology Research Group, Subduction Dynamics Research Center (SDR), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG)

*There may be a change in affiliation in the event of a reorganization of JAMSTEC.
Job Description The Marine Seismology Research Group, Subduction Dynamics Research Center (SDR; Director: Gou Fujie), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG), Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), is soliciting applications for Postdoctoral Researchers for the research project “Understanding the plate subduction seismogenic zone using marine geophysical and geological surveys (FY2020-FY2025).”

At SDR, we conduct various marine geophysical/geological surveys in subduction seismogenic zones around Japan (e.g., Nankai Trough, Japan Trench, and Kuril Trench) to deepen our understanding of the processes that occur in these zones and to contribute to forecast the future evolution of the subduction plate boundary fault and its behaviors.

We are seeking Postdoctoral researcher(s) who will work on studies to better understand subduction seismogenic zones and marine volcanoes based on subsurface imaging using active and passive seismic observations. Successful candidates will work on the following research topic(s), collaborating with researchers from IMG and other institutions/universities.

(1) Development of imaging techniques for multi-parameter subsurface structures (p-wave and s-wave and others) using marine passive seismic data obtained with dense linear arrays (ocean bottom seismographs or distributed acoustic sensing), and its application to a field dataset
(2) Development of an elastic full waveform inversion program for marine active source seismic data and its application to a field dataset
(3) Development/improvement of data acquisition and data analysis methods for seismic surveys in shallow-water regions
(4) Studies to unveil seismogenic zones and volcanoes in the ocean using achievements arising from topics (1)-(3)
