JAMSTEC Young Research Fellow is a program for outstanding young researchers within five years of their Ph.D. in natural science and engineering. By taking advantage of JAMSTEC's research and development environment, they are expected to develop their own research projects into outstanding achievements and make a leap forward as independent, internationally active researchers.

If a successful candidate for JYRF is also selected for the JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists -PD/RPD (limited to cases where the host institution is JAMSTEC), it is possible to hold both positions simultaneously. However, please note that JSPS Postdoctoral Fellows for Foreign Researchers are not eligible for this provision.
As a JYRF, you are free to define and carry out your own research based on your interests and the theme you have proposed, while engaging in active communication within the research environment.
You may also choose to participate in ongoing research projects at JAMSTEC.
Yes, JYRF program encourages interdisciplinary research. We welcome outstanding young researchers from all areas of natural sciences and engineering.
The fellows are expected to collaborate with existing JAMSTEC departments and define their own research themes freely.
Department assignments for successful fellows will be determined by the selection committee based on each fellow’s preferences and research plan.
After the closing date, submitted documents will be reviewed in an initial screening. Applicants who pass the document screening will be invited to an interview. The interview process consists of two parts: a research presentation at an open seminar attended by JAMSTEC researchers, followed by an interview with the selection committee. Both the presentation and the interview will be conducted in English.
Yes. If the host institution is JAMSTEC, it is possible to hold both JYRF and JSPS Research Fellowship (PD/RPD) positions simultaneously. However, please note that JSPS Postdoctoral Fellows for Foreign Researchers are not eligible for this provision.
