Why do we investigate marine ecosystems on the ocean in the Tohoku Region?

What is Kichiji?

This is a kind of rockfish, broadbanded thornyhead in English and an important fishery species captured off the coastal areas of Sanriku.
Its distinctive features include its bright red body color and partially black dorsal fin. The standard body length is about 20 to 30 cm, and they live on the seafloor from 200 to 1,500 m depth. Recognized as being white-fleshed, well-marbled, and tasty, they are a high-quality fish that can be simmered in broth or broiled with salt.

The ocean in the Tohoku Region where Kichiji rockfish live has changed significantly due to the massive earthquake, which occurred on March 11, 2011, and the subsequent tsunamis.

What was happen just after the massive earthquake?
What is currently happening?
What will happen in the future?

We wish to contribute to the revitalization of fisheries in the Tohoku Region by gathering technologies and scientific knowledge that have been accumulated to date and answering to above questions scientifically. That is what JAMSTEC hopes to accomplish.
