The Intra-seasonal to seasonal climate variability study is one of the hottest topics in the weather/climate research community to bridge the gap between the weather and climate predictabilities. Since they are at the crossroad of high-frequency oceanic/atmospheric phenomena and the low-frequency ocean-atmosphere coupled climate phenomena, the intra-seasonal to seasonal processes are responsible for the abrupt onset and decay of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), ENSO-Modoki and Indian Ocean Dipole. Therefore, understanding those processes and the scale interactions among them is important to improve the prediction skills of climate phenomena besides the extreme events. A successful prediction of the intra-seasonal to seasonal climate variations is crucial to societal application studies related to agriculture, water management and infectious diseases.
The symposium aims to discuss the present status of the the intra-seasonal to seasonal studies and exchange views and ideas by researchers in the fields of observation, theory, modeling, and numerical prediction with particular emphasis on the scale interactions. This workshop will promote discussions from a crosscutting perspective to address the future strategies for stimulating project-driven or mission-driven research activities conducted at JAMSTEC, by sharing information on common challenges. The workshop will include presentations by invited speakers and mid-career/young researchers. We welcome graduate students, postdocs, experts, and any other interested participants.
