Conclusion of Letter of Intent (LOI) in regard of Research Cooperation between Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in India

JAMSTEC (President: Dr. Asahiko Taira) signed and concluded the Letter of Intent (LOI) with MoES to commence new research cooperative activities in the field of marine and earth science with several research institutes (*1) under MoES in India as of the 28th of August, 2014.

The anticipated specific areas of research cooperation include Ocean observation for climate variability study in the Indian Ocean, geophysical study of the Andaman subduction zone, and deep sea technological developments and so on.

Due to the conclusion of the LOI, the research cooperative activities between Japan and India in the field of marine and earth science are expected to be activated largely as well as the cooperative relationship between two countries are to be further enhanced.

Furthermore, this conclusion of the LOI was enumerated in the Joint Statement called “Tokyo Declaration for Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership” which was issued at the Japan-India Summit Meeting (*2) held on the 1st of September. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister Narendra Modi from India warmly welcomed the progress of the cooperation project and expressed the expectation for the future advance cooperation in a mutually satisfactory manner.
