NOAA Administrator visiting JAMSTEC
On May 16, 2023, Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator, Richard Spinrad, and his delegation including Assistant Administrator for Research, Dr. Steve Thur, visited the Yokosuka Headquarters of Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).
Dr. Spinrad attended a briefing at our organization, about our activities including the Arctic Research Vessel currently under construction and research contributing to development of digital twins of the ocean. Dr. Spinrad referred to the importance of collaboration between NOAA and JAMSTEC in the context of cooperation between the U.S. and Japan in the fields of marine-Earth science and technology, and placed a high expectation on enhancement of collaboration between the two organizations.
JAMSTEC concluded a memorandum of understanding on collaboration in research with NOAA in 1993, and has collaborated on a variety of projects for 30 years. Current collaborations include observation in North Pacific and tropical regions in the field of global environmental change, modeling research including global warming prediction, and earthquake and tsunami research.
