Job Description The Marine Environmental Impact Assessment Research Group (M-EIA) of the Marine Biodiversity and Environmental Assessment Research Center (BioEnv) (Director: Katsunori Fujikura) , at the Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) solicits applications for a Research Technician.

[Research Description]
The M-EIA of BioEnv at RIGC conducts research/development activities that seek to understand the mechanisms of marine ecosystems and changes in marine biodiversity in response to global climate change, and to assess the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems.
We are seeking a Research Technician who will be involved in the development and maintenance of basic geochemical facilities used to understand marine ecosystems and to watch trends in state-of-the-art geochemical analyses, to optimize our laboratories for our research purposes. The successful candidate should be skilled in facility maintenance and have scientific knowledge on the selection of suitable methods for each observation purpose, and be able to evaluate the performance of selected methods. The candidate will also be expected to build relationships with each researcher based on respect for their abilities and their imperative to pursue higher goals for the best science, technology, and engineering at JAMSTEC.

Each research technician is assigned some of the following responsibilities.
1) To develop and maintain basic geochemical facilities.
2) To study progress in state-of-the-art geochemical analyses.
3) To develop, maintain, and improve marine sampling tools and analyses.

Research Technician:
Research Technician is expected to promote fundamental or comprehensive technological improvements related to research and development, maintain and upgrade these advanced technologies, and conduct research.

[Position]
Research Technician (II):
Research Technician (II) is expected to contribute to the promotion of research and development by accumulating expertise in areas such as observation devices and analytical instruments, as an expert in the operation of basic technologies related to the organization’s research and development efforts.
Requirements Applicants must have completed a master degree in a closely related field of research or technology development, or possess equivalent development skills.

【Qualifications and experience etc.】
*Experience in research and development, including experience and skills in the operation of technologies such as mass spectrometry, chromatography, underwater instruments, and data analysis techniques.
*We welcome those who have interest and motivation in development work to solve marine and global environmental problems and those who have experience working at overseas research institutions.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:

(4) Contract Period:
Total period will be terminated on March 31, 2027 after a contract renewal.
First contract period is from October 1, 2022 to March 31, 2025.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful candidate.
*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after their retirement). Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 5,500,000~6,500,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
