Expected effects
JAMSTEC has been engaged in integrated and fundamental ocean research and development. It also extends research cooperation to academic institutions in various fields of science. Yokohama National University has been providing comprehensive and interdisciplinary ocean studies since the establishment of the Center for Oceanic Studies and Integrated Education (COSIE) in June 2007. COSIE offers a broad spectrum of academic programs in the liberal arts and science disciplines, including the natural sciences, engineering, environmental studies, policies and law.
The two institutions have already worked together in research cruises and special projects. With the comprehensive partnership in place, the cooperation will further be enhanced in a wider spectrum of research fields, including, the Earth’s evolution, global environmental change, marine biosphere, marine technology, as well as ocean policies. The geographical closeness will also benefit in the dispatch of tutors, the acceptance of students and the instruction of research techniques. This will help expand educational and research opportunities, and foster young scientists, thereby contributing to advancing the nation’s marine science and technology. As a kick-off, the two parties will work together in academic programs at the university’s graduate school.
