FY’10 Lecture Meeting “JAMSTEC 2011”
-Scoping a New Era of Marine Science and Technology-

The Japan Agency for Marine –Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) will hold its annual lecture “JAMSTEC2011” on March 2, 2011, as described below.

The annual series of lectures is designed to introduce research activities and achievements undertaken by JAMSTEC in fiscal 2010 to a general public audience.

In this year’s meeting, subtitled “Scoping a New Era of Marine Science and Technology,” leading JAMSTEC scientists will offer presentations on a variety of research projects. The second half of the meeting will feature new frontiers in marine resources exploration technology as well as the scientific ocean drilling by the Deep Drilling Vessel CHIKYU. Following the presentations, a panel of experts will exchange views on framing a new vision of research of marine resources.

Profiles of speakers and panelists


Katsunori Fujikura (Team Leader, Research Institute of Biogeosciences, JAMSTEC)

Katsunori Fujikura received his Ph.D. from the Tokyo University of Fisheries. He joined JAMSTEC in 1988. Since 2007, he has been Senior Scientist and Team Leader of Deep Sea Ecosphere Research Team at the Institute of Biogeosciences. His research interests are Deep-Sea Biology & Ecology. He is also a chair of NRIC/CoML and member of Vent Ecology WG /InterRidge. His outreach activities include the publication of ”Deep-sea Life – Biological observations using research submersibles.“ (Tokai Univ. Press; Fujikura, K., T. Okutani and T. Maruyama, 2008)

Yukio Masumoto (Program Director, Research Institute for Global Change, JAMSTEC)

Yukio Masumoto received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1993.

He spent 18 years at the University of Tokyo as Research Associate and Associate Professor, before joining JAMSTEC in April 2010. His main research interests are tropical ocean and climate variations, with both the modeling and observational approaches. He is also a co-chair of CLIVAR/GOOS Indian Ocean Panel.

Takafumi Kasaya (Research Scientist, Institute for Research on Earth Evolution, JAMSTEC)

Takafumi Kasaya received his Ph.D. degrees in science from the Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, in 2001.

In 2001, he was a COE post doctoral researcher at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University. From 2002 to 2005, he was a post doctoral researcher at Deep Sea Research division at the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC). Since 2006, he has been Research Scientist at the Institute for Research on Earth Evolution (IFREE) at JAMSTEC. His research interests are electro-magnetism and geophysical exploration. He also develops new instruments and techniques using AUV and ROV.

Yoshio Isozaki (Director-General, Marine Technology Center, JAMSTEC)

Yoshio Isozaki is currently playing a critical role in the development of marine technologies as Director-General of Marine Technology Center (MARITEC). He received Master of Engineering degree in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Osaka University. Following the extensive works in designing and construction of the D/V Chikyu in Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., he joined JAMSTEC in 2006 and was in charge of the operation of D/V Chikyu in the technical matters.

Fumio Inagaki (Group Leader, Geomicrobiology Group, Kochi Institute for Core Sample Research, JAMSTEC)

Fumio Inagaki, Ph.D., is a geomicrobiologist at JAMSTEC-Kochi. His research interests are genetic and metabolic functions of subseafloor microbial life, biogeochemical consequences of subseafloor microbial activities and the biosphere, and co-evolution of life and our planet. Using cored sediment samples and new molecular techniques of single cell biology, he investigates genetic and biogeochemical characteristics of previously unknown subseafloor life. He is also recently interested in geobiological technology and engineering related to subseafloor resources, such as storage of carbon dioxide in offshore hydrocarbon systems. Fumio Inagaki is a co-chief scientist of the IODP Expeditions 329 (South Pacific Gyre Subseafloor Life) and 337 (Deep Coalbed Biosphere off Shimokita), a member of the IODP science plan writing committee, and a project leader of the JSPS Leading-Edge Research Infrastructure Program to JAMSTEC, Promotion of the state-of-the-art study of Life and Earth Sciences with facilities of “Subseafloor-Simulation Laboratory” and “Chikyu”.

Tetsuro Urabe (Professor of Earth and Planetary Science, The University of Tokyo)

Prof. Tetsuro URABE is a Professor of Earth and Planetary Science, The University of Tokyo. He received his Ph.D. in Geology at the University of Tokyo in 1976 and worked by Geological Survey of Japan as a Chief Geologist before he was appointed to the present position in 2000. He is specialized in economic geology, seafloor hydrothermal activity, and deep biosphere and leads multi-disciplinary research program “TAIGA” which is a major seafloor hydrothermal research project funded by MEXT.

Satoshi Shiokawa (Director General, Research Vessel Project Group, Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC))

Mining geologist. Mr. Shiokawa joined the former Metal Mining Agency of Japan in 1983, engaging in metals exploration project planning, management, and fieldwork in Japan and abroad. From 1987 to 1989, and after 2002, he was involved mainly in deep-sea mineral resources survey. In 2008, he assumed the position of Director General of Metals Mining Technology Department. Since July 2009, he has been engaged in the present position. JOGMEC is now constructing a new research vessel, which is scheduled to be in service in February 2012, in order to accelerate marine resources exploration and development.

Shinichi Ozeki (President, Japan Mining Industry Association)

Mr. Ozeki obtained his Master’s degree in material science at Tohoku University in 1973. He joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry(MITI) in 1973, where he assumed the positions of Director for Mine Safety Division, Environmental Protection and Industrial Location Bureau , and Senior Director for Industrial Technology Development, Agency for Industrial Science and Technology(AIST). From January 2001 to June 2006, he was Managing Director at the Engineering Advancement Association of Japan (ENAA). In June 2006, He became Senior Managing Director at the Japan Mining Industry Association (JMIA) and assumed responsibility as President in April 2010.


Asahiko Taira (Executive Director, JAMSTEC)

Asahiko Taira obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Texas. After his research and teaching career at Kochi University and the University of Tokyo, he joined JAMSTEC in 2002 and then became Executive Director in 2006. He was awarded the Japan Academy Prize for his research on the plate subduction zone process. He has been actively engaged with scientific ocean drilling including the promotion of IODP and Chikyu.
