JAMSTEC Annual Report Meeting "JAMSTEC 2012"
- Toward a new era of Japan as a sea-going country -

The Japan Agency for Marine -Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) will hold an annual meeting on March 14 to report to the public on its research activities and achievements made in 2011.

This year's meeting, subtitled "Toward a new era of Japan as a sea-going country, "will feature scientific findings obtained from the emergency surveys following the March 11 earthquake in Tohoku, along with future prospects based on them.

The meeting will also host a panel discussion on the "New development and innovation of marine science and technology." Experts will exchange views on marine resources and new energy resources, which may become promising instruments for the post-quake recovery, as well as new frontiers in marine biosciences.
Poster sessions on JAMSTEC's major scientific achievements will also be held in the venue lobby.

Yoshihisa Shirayama (Executive Director, JAMSTEC)
Major research field is marine biology, especially taxonomy and ecology of deep-sea meiobenthos. Recent interests include conservation of marine biodiversity.

Shuichi Kodaira (Program Director, Principal Scientist, Institute For Research on Earth Evolution, JAMSTEC)
Specializes in Marine Geophysics and Structural Seismology

Ken Takai (Program Director, Principal Scientist, Institute of Biogeosciences, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, JAMSTEC)
Research fields: Geobiology , Astrobiology
An explorer for unknown extreme environments and ecosystems in the dark of the Earth. A scientist clarifying interaction between the Earth and Life. A fantasist searching the most ancient living ecosystem in the primitive Earth and extraterrestrial lives in the Solar system.

Takeshi Kawano (Program Director, Principal Research Scientist, Research Institute for Global Change, JAMSTEC)
Specializes in oceanography.
He has been studying changes in the ocean environment through ship-based oceanographic observations. In particular, he has been conducting research on deep water warming in the Pacific Ocean and changes in the Antarctic overturn system.

Yoichi Ishikawa (Group Leader, Principal Research Scientist, Data Research Center for Marine-Earth Sciences, JAMSTEC)
Main research interests are simulation of ocean circulation using numerical modeling and data assimilation. He also interested in coupled atmosphere-ocean modeling and ocean ecosystem modeling.

Yoshio Fukao (Team Reader, Principal Scientist, Institute for Research on Earth Evolution, JAMSTEC)
Specializes in Seismology

Eiichi Tajika (Professor of Earth and Planetary System Science, The University of Tokyo)
He is interested in a wide range of subjects from the long-term evolution of surface environments of the Earth and other "habitable planets" (which may have oceans) in extrasolar planetary systems to the short-term environmental changes of the Earth through the variations of ocean biogeochemical cycles.

Yoshihiko Yamada (Professor of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University)
Visiting researcher at the Ocean Policy Research Foundation. Researcher on maritime issues.

Hiroshi Yoshida (Group Leader, Principal Research Scientist, Marine Technology and Engineering Center, JAMSTEC)
He has been studying underwater vehicle technologies for the past 10 years and leads efforts to apply those technologies to a variety of applications. His current interests include research and development of unmanned underwater vehicles as well as underwater electromagnetics.

Nobumasa Komori(Team Leader, Senior Scientist, Earth Simulator Center, JAMSTEC)
He leads a project of simulation-based observing system research and ensemble data assimilation for the ocean and atmosphere.

Nobuhisa Eguchi(Group leader, Senior Engineer, Center for Deep Earth Exploration (CDEX), JAMSTEC )
Managing onboard laboratory facilities of the Deep Sea Drilling Vessel Chikyu and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) expeditions, as well as CDEX international relationship. Working as the Expedition Project Manager onboard for Exp. 319 and 326.

Asahiko Taira (Executive Director, JAMSTEC)
He was awarded the Japan Academy Prize for his research on the plate subduction zone process. He has been actively engaged with scientific ocean drilling including the promotion of IODP and the Deep Sea Drilling Vessel Chikyu.
