生命で満ちた熱水を目の前にして

（今回のレポートは、英サウザンプトン大学から航海に参加している姫様ベリティさんです。彼女はこのミッドケイマンリッジでしか確認されていない深海エビ「リミカリス・ハイビサエ」を世界で初めて記載した研究者でもあります。そんな彼女が初めて自分の目で見た深海熱水とはどんな世界だったのでしょうか。それでは英語版とあわせて和訳版もどうぞ。）
ベリティさんは深海エビ「リミカリス・ハイビサエ」を世界で初めて記載。今回、実際にこの目で見るために「しんかい6500」に乗り込みました。
On Sunday, I journeyed inside the Shinkai6500 to the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, saw hot, shimmering vent fluid gushing right in front of my face and was close enough to the vent animals that if it wasn’t for the glass and sphere I could reach out and touch them! It was one of the best experiences of my life and unique in every way. To see the vents and life in three dimensions has provided me with a unique perspective and understanding of the Von Damm Vent Field, which we first observed in 2010 and hadn’t been seen in person before.
The first time we all got into the Shinkai6500 to prepare to dive we had to abort because there was an oceanic white tip off the ship’s stern, which would be cool for us to see but not so good for the divers who have to release the ropes from the sub! On the descent I saw the transition from bright, sunlit water, to deeper hues of blue and then loss of colours, and then suddenly water looked grey and finally black. The black was the best because it was much more atmospheric and the bioluminescence was just jaw-droppingly exquisite. On the way down it looked like the flashes of life were all travelling upwards and vice versa on the way down.
We landed on the seafloor in an area of sediment with some lovely shrimp and sea cucumbers roaming around. After taking some samples of the sediment, we moved on to the Von Damm Vent Field. Here, we saw an underwater mountain - wow! We travelled up this mountain to get to the main hydrothermal vent at its peak. It was so much steeper than it looked in the video footage we had captured before using remotely-operated vehicles. The main spire at the top was amazing. Hydrothermal fluid was gushing past the viewing port and I was able to look down on all the life below us. Further down the mountain, at the big vent chimney, I could hear the vent fluid gushing out of the orifice, like an upside-down waterfall. I saw the three species of shrimp and snail I've described here, all close enough to reach out and touch in their natural environment. We took many samples for subsequent analyses. We hope that these samples will help in efforts to understand the distribution of life in the deep ocean and how these distributions are established and maintained. On the way back to the surface, I finally found I had time to eat lunch, but why eat when you can gaze out into the darkness and watch flashes of life exploding with light in front of your eyes?
During the dive I felt a bit like an alien observer on another planet. The bioluminescence was pretty cosmic and it really made me want to go to space. The experience has made me look at the world as a much vaster place than the tiny bit we are familiar with. I feel humbled to have ventured to the depths of the sea and been part of this domain. To have experienced the wonder of seeing vents teeming with life is truly a dream fulfilled!
I am very grateful for the opportunity to join the voyage of the RV Yokosuka and Shinkai6500, and for the great privilege of diving in the Shinkai6500. It is an experience that has filled me with overwhelming wonder and joy that I will never forget. It has been a pleasure to work with the scientists and crew onboard. I hope that I will get the opportunity to work with some of them again in the future.

日曜日、私は「しんかい6500」に乗ってカリブ海の底に行ってきました。熱水が私の目の前に吹き出していて、「しんかい6500」の覗き窓や耐圧殻がなければ、熱水の近くに棲んでいる動物たちに触ることができるくらいの距離でした。
2010年にフォンダム熱水噴出域で活動が無人探査で確認されてから、この熱水活動やそこに群がる生物群集を自分自身の目で観察したのは、私の潜航が世界で初めてとなりました。
これは私の人生の中でも本当に特別な体験で、この経験を通じて、私はフォンダム熱水域の生態系についていろいろと考えることができました。
「しんかい6500」の覗き窓からコンニチワ
その日の朝、私たちは「しんかい6500」に乗り込んで潜航の準備を始めたのですが、一端中断せざるを得ませんでした。母船の船尾にサメがいたのです。サメは、見る分には良いのですが、潜水船からロープを外すスイマーにとっては最悪です。
どうやらサメがいなくなって無事に潜航が始まると、潜水船の窓の外は明るい光から太陽の差し込む水中、深い青、そしてだんだんと色がなくなり、水の色は灰色から真っ黒に変わっていきました。そしてその真っ黒な水の中には、びっくりするほど優雅な生物発光を観ることができるのです。
それは生命が光り輝くようで、私たちが沈んでいくのと反対に浮き上がっていくように見えました。
しばらくすると、私たちは、かわいらしいエビやナマコが歩きまわる、泥に覆われた海底に到着しました。ここで泥のサンプルを採取した後、フォンダム熱水域へ向かいました。ここの熱水活動の中心は海底の山の頂上にあるので、登って行かなくてはなりません。山の斜面は、これまで無人探査機の映像を観て想像していたのよりも、ずっと急でした。
頂上から熱水が吹き出すようすは、すばらしいものでした。覗き窓を通して、熱水が目の前を流れていき、近くに棲んでいる生物を間近に観ることができました。さらにその下には大きな熱水噴出孔があり、まるで滝が逆流しているような感じで熱水が吹き出す音も聴こえました。
私はこれまでにフォンダム熱水域に棲む生物の記載を行ってきましたが、これらの生物が棲んでいる環境を初めて間近で観ることができました。そして生物のサンプルも採集しました。このサンプルを使って、熱水に棲んでいる生物が、深海のどこでどうやって群集を作って維持していくのかを明らかにしていきたいと考えています。
海底での調査を終えて海面に戻る途中、やっとお昼ご飯を食べる時間ができましたが、暗闇の中で生命の光が弾けとんでいっているようすを前にして、ご飯を食べていることなんてできませんでした。
潜っている間、私はなんだか他の惑星を調査している宇宙人のような気分でした。生物発光は宇宙的で、実際、宇宙に行ってみたい気分にもなりました。この経験を通して、世界というのは本当に広くて、私たちが知っているのは本当に小さい一部分に過ぎないと感じました。
実際に海の深さを体験することで海を畏れる気持ちになり、また生命で満ちた熱水を目の前にした経験は本当に夢のようでした。
「よこすか/しんかい6500」の航海に参加することができて、また「しんかい6500」で潜航するという機会に恵まれて、本当に感謝しています。この経験は、私にとって一生忘れられないものになります。乗船研究者と乗組員、「しんかい6500」運航チームのみなさんと一緒に仕事をしていることも、楽しい経験です。将来、また一緒に仕事をする機会がありますように。
