The Center for Deep Earth Exploration (CDEX) is an implementing organization for the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), managing the Deep Sea Drilling Vessel CHIKYU as one of three IODP platforms within a framework established by the IODP member countries.

The IODP begins a new 10-year phase with the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), from the end of Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) in September 2013. IODP depends on facilities funded by three platform providers with financial contributions from five additional partner agencies.
Together, these entities represent 26 nations whose scientists are selected to staff IODP research expeditions conducted throughout the world's oceans.
IODP uses multiple drilling platform to access different subseafloor environments during research expeditions. Three Implementing Organizations in Japan, United State and Europe serve as platform operators.
