CDEX - IODP Structure

“The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) is an international marine research collaboration that explores Earth's history and dynamics using ocean-going research platforms to recover data recorded in seafloor sediments and rocks and to monitor sub-seafloor environments. IODP depends on facilities funded by three platform providers with financial contributions from five additional partner agencies. Together, these entities represent 26 nations whose scientists are selected to staff IODP research expeditions conducted throughout the world's oceans.”

The framework document for the new phase of IODP can be downloaded and reviewed from the IODP homepage.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is the key sponsor of D/V Chikyu, with additional support from the Australian-New Zealand IODP Consortium (ANZIC), and the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD).

CDEX is the Japanese operator for this program, and operates the drill ship Chikyu for drilling expeditions.

CDEX IODP structure
Each platform provider (MEXT/JAMSTEC for D/V Chikyu) uses a Facility Board to advise and recommend IODP proposals and projects for implementation to the Implementing Organization (IO). For the Chikyu, the JOIDES Resolution Facility Board (JRFB) is used for non-riser drilling projects, while the Chikyu IODP Board (CIB) is used for riser drilling projects. The JR Science Evaluation Panel (SEP) receives drilling proposals from the science community after they have been submitted to the Proposal Database System (PDS) and evaluates and ranks them for forwarding to the proper FB.

Chikyu IODP Board (CIB)

The CIB and CDEX are advised by several panels; the proposal advisory team (PAT), the technical advisory team (TAT), and the individual project coordination teams (PCT).

Proposal Advisory Team (PAT)

Workshops for proposals are proposed to the CIB, which recommends (or not) approval from JAMSTEC, which will then review funding possibilities. The CIB then establishes a PAT when the CIB determines a workshop proposal for a riser project proposal needs to be developed into a full proposal. The PAT assists the principal investigators (PI) in developing an operationally feasible full proposal.

Technical Advisory Team (TAT)

The TAT is a panel comprised of external industry and science experts, which advises CDEX in achieving better science and long-term engineering developments related to logging/sampling/coring, drilling or vessel infrastructure, procedures and shipboard equipment usage, and borehole and observatory measurements.

Project Coordination Team (PCT)

The PCT are a group of panels that the CIB establishes to coordinate project planning for riser drilling projects. They are composed of project proponents or leading principal investigators (PIs), and leading scientists who advise the project scientists on specific scientific specialties and coordinate science operations across expeditions, as needed.
