Turbo-corer

While drilling to extreme depths, the drill pipes encounter increased friction over the increasing length of the borehole and therefore drill bit efficiency decreases in transferring power from the Power Swivel (Top Drive) from the rig floor down to the drilling bit. This loss in power at the drill bit must be compensated for; this new design being developed for a more powerful and efficient rotary core barrel (RCB) Turbo-Corer promises to do just that. Like other coring systems, the Turbo-Corer is wireline retrievable and is powered by the drilling mud.

This system improves core quality because the rotation speed is stabilized by rotating only the bottom of the drill pipe, not the entire drill pipe.
