Advisor Toshiyuki Hibiya (Emeritus Professor of the University of Tokyo, Visiting Professor of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology) has been named a JpGU Fellow at the 2025 Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU) Meeting held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City. The JpGU Fellowship is a prestigious honor awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Earth and planetary sciences or who have played a pivotal role in advancing geoscience activities in Japan.
Dr. Hibiya has dedicated his career to elucidating the physical mechanisms of deep ocean mixing and quantifying their effects—an essential key to understanding the global overturning circulation that drives long-term climate variability. In addition to his scientific achievements, he has been a driving force in advancing deep ocean mixing research both in Japan and internationally, notably by organizing specialized sessions at JpGU and various international conferences.
He currently serves as Vice-President of the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans (IAPSO), where he actively fosters the development and expansion of global research networks. This award not only affirms his status as a leading authority in deep ocean mixing, but also honors his exemplary leadership and enduring contributions to the international oceanographic community.
Commendation:
For innovative contributions to understanding the mechanisms behind the formation of mixing hotspots in the deep ocean and their global intensity distribution, achieved through a combined theoretical and observational approach
