21 Dec. 2011: Jakarta

" Baruna Jaya has returned to Merak port, Indonesia "

R/V Baruna Jaya-III has returned to her mother port Merak, west of Jakarta in the morning of December 21, after 20 days cruise in the eastern Indian Ocean. Since we could not report about our activity on time due to limited communication line, this is to let you know our BJ cruise has fully completed the mission today.

JAMSTEC and BPPT researchers conducted 4 times/day radiosonde sounding during 2 weeks (Dec 5 - 18). Since due to rough sea conditions, BJ could not smoothly cruise against wind/current to the west. Thus, we decided to conduct the statinary observation at 7S, 95E, where is far east from original plan. Although it was expected to meet the convectively suppressed period after the MJO-convection passed to the Indonesian maritime continent in late November - early December, active convections were frequently observed during the first half period. Then, calm condition prevailed over the site in the latter half.

Details on the cruise and preliminary results can be found in the Cruise Report, which will be available from this CINDY web site within a week or so.
