Earth System Model Development and Application Group (ESM-DAG)

We are carrying out research and development on a simulation model called Earth system model (ESM). This model includes climate model incorporating physical processes in atmosphere, ocean and land as its core, and encloses the models of carbon and other global geochemical material cycles, and other biogeochemical processes.

Using ESM, we can comprehensively deal with interaction of climate change and biogeochemical processes including ecosystems, understand the change in global environment in the past, and conduct the future projection in global warming and other environmental issues.

More specifically, the tasks of Earth System Model Development and Application Group, are the following research and development (see figure too).

  • Development of Earth System Model
  • Development and improvement of component models related to ESM, studies on elementary processes included in ESM, ground observation and satellite data analysis for evaluation and improvement of ESM
  • Understanding Earth system by simulation, and application of ESM to global environmental issues

We are proceeding with these tasks in collaboration with experts in other groups in Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) and in other organizations , and will contribute to IPCC and SDGs through participation in international projects etc.
