Over the land in the tropics, we see strong diurnal cycle of precipitation;
in other words, precipitation tends to occur at particular time of the day.
In inland regions, precipitation tends to occur in late afternoon and early
at night when warmed land surface due to insolation makes air parcels near
the surface easy to ascend. On the other hand, the situation is not simple
in the coastal region like Bengkulu, and thus the diurnal cycle is one of
the targets of this IOP.
We observe that, around the Bengkulu observatory and hotel we visit,
precipitation tends to occur in the late afternoon and early at night,
similar to the inland regions. As shown in the upper panel, today we had a
shower event in which 1-hour precipitation from 16 o'clock reached 33 mm
and surface temperature dropped by 4 degrees.
Outside the observatory, there are boys playing soccer without concern for
the heavy rain. Seeing them, I feel I might not need to wear raincoat every
time I perform observation in the rain, as I wear work clothes and thus do
not mind their getting wet. Next time, I try to behave like these boys.
