MarE3 provides a variety of scientific support, from planning scientific drilling projects to supporting researchers, all to maximize Chikyu’s capabilities.
In Chikyu’s labs, we process and analyze geological samples (cores, cuttings, and mud gas) collected during scientific research, propose and prepare laboratory operation plans to facilitate scientific research, and manage the labs during expeditions. We also plan and implement long-term laboratory improvements based on requests & comments from the researchers.
We provide a wide range of support, from assisting with the drafting of scientific drilling proposals with researchers based on technical and cost limits, and disseminate information about Chikyu's activities.
Domestic research support for IODP & Scientific Ocean Drilling

Support for travel expenses related to IODP expeditions
The Japan Earth Drilling Science Consortium (J-DESC) supports travel for Japan-based researchers selected as onboard science party members.
-
IODP post-expedition research
J-DESC supports post-cruise research for science party members, at their academic/research institute, to help promote Japan's prominence in scientific ocean research drilling.
-
Support for IODP/ICDP related workshops, etc.
