"Measuring drops"

Even the tiny things are also important for weather and climate.
The sensors are to measure the size and number of the raindrops. By using the data, we are investigating the "drop size distribution (DSD)": in short, the ratio of the number of big/small raindrops to the total raindrops.

The different type of cloud produce different DSD. Thus the DSD is an information of the cloud where the drops were born and traveled.
In addition, the DSD is important information for better estimation of the precipitation from radar data. The oceanic/land surface are also impacted differently by different DSD.
