Second Joint International Earthquake Science Symposium

We will hold the Second Joint International Earthquake Science Symposium at JAMSTEC Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences and Yokosuka Headquarters in May 22-23, 2025, jointly organized by University of Texas Institute for Geophysics, JAMSTEC, and GEOMAR.
This symposium is jointly organized by the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics, JAMSTEC, and GEOMAR and aims to deepen our collective understanding of earthquake mechanics, dynamics, and predictability.
The primary objective is to bring together scientists from different institutions to significantly advance earthquake science by:

  • Sharing knowledge and recent progress,
  • Identifying key outstanding questions and research needs,
  • Strengthening connections between field studies, laboratory experiments, seismological observations, and modeling, and
  • Fostering new collaborations on these topics.

This symposium is part of an annual series that rotates among the United States, Japan, and Germany, with each year focusing on a set of emerging subtopics where tangible progress can be made.

  • The first symposium was held at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics on February 14–16, 2024.
  • The symposium will be conducted in English.

Symposium Themes

Session 1:
Drilling, rock physics, and geodetic study (JTRACK, DONET, Wave glider)
Session 2:
Seismological imaging and observations
Session 3:
Modeling, Simulation and Data science
