R/V MIRAI

"MISMO cruise has just started"

Fine
According to the weather map and satellite images, there exist two typhoons in the south of Japan.

Observations:

The following observations have been started.
   Surface meteorological station
   Surface water monitoring (T, S)
ISAR (Infrared sea surface Autonomous Radiometer)
   35-GHz vertical-pointing cloud radar
   Mie-scattering LIDAR
   Ceilometer
   ADCP (Acoustic Current Doppler Profiler)
So far, all instruments work well.

Remarks:

R/V MIRAI departed Sekinehama at 05:50 LST today. In spite of such early morning departure, many people came to see us off (photos-1, 2). We appreciate them very much. After short calling at Hachinohe port (only 5 hours), we are now cruising to Singapore. MIRAI is cruising southward with 16 kt, and present position as of 19:00 LST is 40-15N, 142-15E. As mentioned above, typhoon is developing and we will have a chance to meet it the day after tomorrow or later...
