R/V MIRAI

"Mirai meets the rain"

Rain, but partly cloudy.

Observations:

In the morning, we deployed a sub-surface ADCP mooring at (1.5S, 80.5E). After that, we conducted the CTD observation and also called at ATLAS buoy site to check their health status. In the afternoon, as we encountered a meso-convective system (MCS), we launched the videosonde.
From yesterday, we've uploaded some results of radiosonde and surface meteorological measurements in the data page.

Remarks:

Today, we deployed the ADCP buoy at the southest apex of the mooring array in the rainy condition. We are now all know how the time goes by during the buoy operation. It took about 2 hours to complete the deployment (photos-1, 2).
In the afternoon, as we found an MCS at south-east direction (photo-3), we decided to launch the videosonde to obtain the number density of precipitation particles as well as their size and shapes.
To surely conduct the observation inside of the clouds, we changed the ship's course from the eastward to south-eastward. We could obtain many samples mainly from stratiform clouds at 4-6km layer. Photos 4-6 shows some of the scenes of videosonde observation.
